When you hear the words purpose driven entrepreneur, what mental image do you have initially?
Often I think of authors, speakers, and coaches as purpose driven entrepreneurs. Or an entrepreneur who is driven by their ambitions and passions to help other people.
Purpose driven entrepreneurs can be serial, social, or lifestyle entrepreneurs.
Many people think of a purpose driven entrepreneur as a social entrepreneur.
Social entrepreneurs are motivated by social change more than a business venture. These types of entrepreneurs are focused on using their skills to organize resources to achieve social or environmental change. These entrepreneurs may be concerned with making a profit but are primarily focused on building social capitol. The entrepreneur’s business is the vehicle for the social entrepreneur to achieve their desired goals. The entrepreneur’s primary focus is to solve or improve a societal problem.
Many social entrepreneurs are purpose driven entrepreneurs, but not all purpose driven entrepreneurs are social entrepreneurs.
Serial entrepreneurs can be purpose driven. They can be defined by their moral code, their character, and the businesses that they choose to be involved, along with the specific problems that the businesses solve. Profit is still a primary motivator, but the businesses they choose to be involved directly affects the type of people the serial entrepreneur wants to help.
Lifestyle entrepreneurs can be purpose driven even if their entire business is not focused on a certain cause. It could be using their business to raise money for a charity during certain times of the year. Lifestyle entrepreneurs may choose the type of business they start, so they can help others in similar experiences to what they have experienced.
When I think of a purpose driven entrepreneur I don’t necessarily think of whether the person is a serial, social, or lifestyle entrepreneur, but someone who is driven by a mission and who wants to make the world a better place. It is someone who uses their passions and ambitions to help people.
The reason the entrepreneur is purpose driven could be based off a life experience, an experience that has profoundly affected them, or simply by seeing a problem and wanting to solve it. This experience has propelled the entrepreneur into a life calling of helping people and using their skills to improve other people’s lives and affect change.
Influence, Income, and Impact
Purpose driven entrepreneurs need to be focused on 3 specific areas of their businesses to impact the greatest number of people.
- Influence- Dictionary.com defines influence as the capacity or power of persons or things to be a compelling force on or produce effects on the actions, behavior, opinions, etc., of others:
One of the fastest ways for a purpose driven entrepreneur to influence people today is by creating content about their topic and cause. This content can then be syndicated across the Internet through Free channels like social media, or via paid media buys. Content can help build the entrepreneur’s online community. Content can increase the entrepreneur’s social media, and increase the size of their email list. Having a bigger email list and social media following allows the entrepreneur to influence more people.
- Income- is essential for all businesses and all types of entrepreneurs. Income gives the purpose driven entrepreneur options. Income offers the opportunity to reach more people and build more influence through paid media buys. If systems are in place to create revenue streams that are profitable based on the paid media buys, then this will allow the purpose driven entrepreneur to have an even bigger influence and more importantly a greater impact.
- Impact- is the highest level of influence. Impact is not just affecting actions, behaviors, and opinions. Impact is about transforming lives. The impact is the reason why a purpose driven entrepreneur exists.
Transforming lives is about helping someone go from where they are in life to helping them achieve their goals, and helping them become who they want to be.
Transformation normally is not easy. I often think of the stages of a caterpillar transforming to become a butterfly. When the caterpillar wraps itself in a cocoon, over time the caterpillar’s body becomes liquefied before it reorganizes and becomes a butterfly.
The transformation of a person can also be like that of a butterfly. Although the person may not always go through a physical transformation, they can change physically. Often the transformation that affects our thoughts, habits, behaviors, and skills can be paramount. Emotionally, the person may undergo just as big of a metamorphosis as they undergo this change.
As the person steps into becoming who they want to be, often, they help others transform into becoming someone similar.
Helping people through this type of transformation is the highest level of influence and impact anyone can have on another individual.
Helping people achieve this type of transformation is the power of the purpose driven entrepreneur in fulfilling their calling and making the world a better place.
Remember the positive impact that you make on other people matters.
